I don't know if I am the one to answer this question, but I have owned both and currently own a 60" rear discharge. There are members with better experience than I with only 2 points of reference.
The main advantage of the side discharge as I see it is ability to blow leaves of grass to one side or into a grass catcher.
The main advantages of the rear discharge are even distribution of clipping and the ability to cut thicker higher grass (less clogging). With mulching blades there is no need to collect clippings.

One problem with the "side" is the side chute that sticks out an extra foot. So I took the chute off so I can mow up close to stuff on both sides of the deck. The chute was also causing grass to collect in clumps and rows. Once I took the chute off, the grass blows out nice and even. For my use I'm very happy with the "side". ....

I have a 72 inch mulching. It doesn't discharge any direction. Needs more HP to run is the only issue that I can think of. I like the fact that I can drive any direction and not worry about throwing grass clipping on any thing. I can also get right up on things BOTH sides without worrying about grass clippings. I also have a side 72 inch side discharge it is like any other side discharge. ....
